“Is Hurghada safe?” is the question we hear most on WhatsApp, usually right before someone books their first trip. We live and work in Hurghada, so here is a straight answer: what it is really like, where the small risks are, and how to avoid them.
Is Hurghada safe for tourists?
Yes. Hurghada is one of Egypt’s main Red Sea resort cities and is built around tourism: hotels, the marina, beaches, dive centres and day trips. Millions of visitors come every year, and the city is used to welcoming families, couples and solo travellers.
The everyday risks are the normal ones for any holiday by the sea: strong sun, dehydration, and agreeing a price before you get into a taxi. None of them should stop you from enjoying your trip.
Is it safe to walk around Hurghada?
Yes. It is safe to walk around Hurghada, alone or with others. The marina, the promenades and the main streets of Sakkala, El Mamsha and Dahar are busy with visitors and locals, during the day and in the evening.
- Walk in the morning or evening in summer; midday heat is the real danger.
- Carry water and a little cash in small notes.
- In the old town and the bazaar, shop owners will invite you in. A smile and “no, thank you” is enough.
Want a guided first look? Our Hurghada city tour covers El Mina Mosque, the New Marina, a perfume factory, the Felfela viewpoint and the bazaar for €30.
Is it safe to travel from Hurghada to Luxor or Cairo?
Yes. Trips to and from Luxor and Cairo are safe, and on our tours the team is with you from hotel pickup to drop-off. It is a long day by road, so the plan matters more than anything else:
- Luxor from Hurghada: about 300 km, roughly 4 hours each way. From €85 by bus, all entry tickets included.
- Cairo from Hurghada: about 460 km, roughly 5-6 hours each way. From €65 by bus, with a guide speaking your language.
Bring a breakfast box from your hotel, light clothes and sunscreen. Water is provided all day.
Are boat trips in Hurghada safe?
Yes. Our boats are licensed and insured. On snorkelling trips you get a mask, fins and a life jacket, and a snorkel guide is in the water with you. If you are not a strong swimmer, tell the guide before you get in and keep your life jacket on.
Popular boat trips with us:
- Orange Bay and Hula Hula: from €25 per person
- Dolphin House: from €25 per person
- Private speedboat: from €150 per boat for 4 hours
What if someone feels unwell on a trip?
We provide medical help immediately. Tell your guide straight away and we take care of the rest. Most problems on a Red Sea holiday come from the sun, so drink water, wear a hat and use sunscreen, especially on boat days.
Is the desert safe?
Yes, with a guide. On our Super Safari (€30) and 3-hour quad tour (€25) a desert guide is with the group the whole time and water is included. Wear closed shoes, light long clothes, sunglasses and a scarf for the dust.
Practical safety tips for Hurghada
- Sun and water: the sun is stronger than it feels with the sea breeze. Drink bottled water.
- Taxis: agree the price before the ride, or book a private transfer (airport to hotel €15).
- Dress: swimwear is fine at the beach and the hotel; cover shoulders and knees for mosques and the old town.
- Money: carry some cash in small notes for tips and drinks.
- Official advice: as with any trip abroad, check your own government’s travel advice before you go.
Is Hurghada safe for families and solo travellers?
Yes. Families book our island days, the semi-submarine and the aquarium every week, and many solo travellers join group boat trips to meet people. Our guests say it best: “we felt so safe with him” is a line that comes up again and again in our 5.0 Google reviews.
